Character is the combination of ethical and moral qualities. Someone with good character is bothered about their ethics and moral standing. They live by their moral standing and won't tolerate those who don’t.
Strength of Character is taking the moral high ground
When you have strength of character you choose to take the moral high ground so you stand up for your beliefs. It is when you meet with difficulties that you may find strength of character.
Strength of Character is pushing forward
Strength of character is pushing forward, rather than withdrawing; not living in denial, or ignoring the negatives. If you're ignoring the negatives, you're in denial and that has nothing to do with how emotionally strong you are.
Building mental and emotional strength
Building mental and emotional strength is character building. Mental strength forms the foundations for having genuine self-confidence. Through a strength of character, you become more self-aware. Mental strength helps to reflect and that’s good.
Though you may not always be in a position to change the situation you find ourselves in, you do have a choice in how you respond and that has everything to do with strength of character.
I have heard it said that strength of character is formed through our work, but beauty of character is formed at home. I guess that might be true in an ideal world.
Either way, true strength of character is to do what is right when no one else is doing it and as you say that takes mental strength.
Thanks. Yes, although I would say that adversity can give us mental strength, which builds character, but it can also work the other way too.
Our characters are formed very early on and you're right, parental support is very much pivotal to that. But even without the parental support, we can build strength of character through understanding our lives.
When you say, 'either way, true strength of character is to do what is right when no one else is doing it' - that is absolutely right and we need to. I think if more of us were doing what is right, we'd be living in a better world.
